First Public Appearance of Armaments Bureau's 105mm Wheeled Tank Towards Mass Production

Reported 8 months ago

On June 24, 2024, the Armaments Bureau unveiled the 105mm wheeled tank developed based on the Yunpao 8x8 armored vehicle. Originally the domestic development project for the 105mm wheeled tank faced uncertainties post completion, but now it is back on track with a public display at the Yunghsieh Motor Test Field in Nantou. The project, under the codename 'Leopard Project,' aimed to meet the army's operational needs and has completed two prototype vehicles (D1, D2) from 2019 to 2023. Following an extended push from the Armaments Bureau, the Ministry of National Defense has approved further refinement and development of a third prototype with reduced vehicle height. The prototype tank (D2) showcased today signals potential future mass production and service. This collaborative development between the Armaments Bureau's 202nd and 209th factories and the Academy of Sciences not only aims to replace the army's existing M41D light tanks but also enhance the rapid mobile combat firepower of armored brigades to meet the operational needs of the Marine Corps and military police.
