On the night of July 2, 2024, the Penghu fishing boat Da Jin Man 88 was fishing for small eel in waters outside Kinmen when it was boarded and detained by mainland Chinese maritime police, causing shock among local fishermen. The boat's owner and fishermen expressed surprise as during previous instances they were only advised to leave but not forcefully detained. The incident possibly involves political factors, and the elderly mother of the captain, fearing the impact of her son not returning from sea, is being shielded from the truth. Two Taiwanese and three Indonesian fishermen were detained, with hopes for a speedy resolution for their safe return to Penghu.
