Foreigners withdrew money from emerging market portfolios in April, marking the first monthly outflow since October, as concerns over tighter U.S. monetary policy led to outflows from stocks in India and Indonesia. Data from the Institute of International Finance showed a net non-resident portfolio outflow of $0.7 billion in April, compared to net inflows of $30.2 billion in March and $16.3 billion in April 2023. The main driver of the negative flow was outflows from ex-China stock portfolios, while ex-China debt saw inflows. Chinese stocks experienced outflows, but Chinese debt continued to see inflows, indicating a positive trend.
