Former Boxing National Athlete Caught as Accomplice in Fraud Ring

Reported about 1 year ago

A man surnamed Chen from the Bamboo Union gang was arrested for allegedly leading a fraud ring, including former boxing national athlete Chung Chun-an, who won fifth place in the 57 kg weight class at the 2006 Doha Asian Games. New Taipei police arrested Chen and four others, seized four million NT dollars in illicit money and 200 packets of drug-laced coffee, and transferred them for charges including organized crime, aggravated fraud, and drugs. Chung was allowed bail of 20,000 NT dollars. Chen, his partner surnamed Lai, and others were detained. Chen, a 41-year-old, had a successful boxing career but fell into drug addiction and has had past run-ins with the law for drug-related offenses. The group was involved in a scam operation that conned a woman into transferring four million NT dollars by impersonating TV personality Chen Wen-qian. The gang also laundered money through dummy accounts and used Chung to monitor victims. Police arrested the group on June 27, with Lai found carrying 200 packets of drug-laced coffee.
