Former Taoyuan City Mayor and Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council Cheng Wen-tsang, celebrated his 57th birthday on July 6th but ended up detained on corruption charges related to the Hwaya Science Park development case. The Taoyuan District Court granted him bail of NT$5 million and imposed restrictions on his residence, travel, and overseas trips. Cheng is accused of receiving bribes in connection to the development project, where he allegedly accepted money to assist in the approval process. Despite returning the bribe later, detailed financial records are in possession of the authorities as investigations continue.
