Former Mayor Cheng Wen-tsang Suspected of Corruption Granted Bail of 5 Million Taiwanese Dollars, Walks out of Court with a Smile

Former Mayor of Taoyuan and current Chairman of the Cross-Strait Exchange Foundation, Cheng Wen-tsang, was suspected of violating the Anti-Corruption Act and accepting bribes. The Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office applied for restraining order and prohibition from meeting for Cheng. The court decided to grant bail of 5 million New Taiwanese Dollars and impose restrictions on residence and travel. Cheng walked out of the court with a smile, accompanied by his lawyer, without speaking to the media. The case involves allegations of corruption dating back seven years, and the court deemed bail necessary, despite the prosecution's appeal. Other defendants in the case were also under various restrictions. The Prosecutors Office considered the court's decision improper and filed an appeal immediately.
