On June 9th, a male named Ruan, a Chinese national, drove a speedboat directly towards Taiwan's Tamsui River, shouting to defect to the Republic of China; he was arrested. Ruan, a 60-year-old former naval captain of the PLA, facing financial troubles, took the speedboat from a Fujian port in mainland China, travelled 260 km for 15 hours before being intercepted near Taiwan. Ruan claimed that due to his anti-CCP stance, he was restricted from leaving mainland China and chose to seek refuge in Taiwan. The prosecutor deemed it a serious offense under the Immigration Law, leading to Ruan's immediate arrest and detention with the option to appeal. TVBS reports more details on this daring escape attempt.
