Former President Chen Shui-bian angrily criticized the 'One China Principle,' stating that the People's Republic of China never foots the bill and even the US government cannot accept it, emphasizing that Ma Ying-jeou is a habitual deceiver. The controversy arose from President Lai Ching-te's recent interview with Time magazine, where he referenced the position of 'both sides not subordinate to each other,' claiming that both former Presidents Tsai Ing-wen and Ma Ying-jeou had previously mentioned this stance. Ma Ying-jeou clarified that his discourse is based on the 'One China Principle' and accused Lai of deliberately putting words in his mouth, branding him a deceiver. Another former president, Chen Shui-bian, criticized Ma Ying-jeou's interpretation of the 'One China Principle,' asserting that the People's Republic of China never acknowledges it, therefore labeling Ma as a repeat offender of deception, questioning how he has the audacity to opine on the matter.
