Former President Chen Shui-bian Accused of Money Laundering Case: Taipei District Court Rules Statute of Limitations Expired, Acquits Him

Reported 8 months ago

Former President Chen Shui-bian was accused of money laundering in a case involving former Taipei 101 Chairwoman Diana Chen, where he was indicted but unable to attend trial due to illness. The Taipei District Court ruled to suspend the trial in 2015. Recently, the High Court determined that the statute of limitations for prosecuting Chen had expired, resulting in an acquittal that can be appealed. The Taipei District Prosecutors' Office is considering whether to appeal. Chen and his wife were previously convicted of corruption and sentenced to 8 years for accepting a bribe to help Diana Chen secure a position at Taipei 101. Due to Chen's health issues, the trial was suspended in 2015, and recently the High Court ruled that the statute of limitations had expired, leading to his acquittal in the money laundering case.
