Former President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandez, who visited Taiwan in November 2021, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison by a US court for his involvement in drug trafficking. Hernandez, who was arrested in February 2022 after stepping down as president, was extradited to the US in April. The court found him guilty of assisting in the trafficking of at least 400 tons of cocaine, valued at around $10 billion, into the US, contributing to drug addiction and violence. The judge described Hernandez as a 'double-faced politician hungry for power' during the trial. Hernandez's brother, Tony Hernandez, was also sentenced to life in prison in March 2021 for drug trafficking. Honduras cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in March 2023 to establish relations with China.
