Major League Baseball has handed out punishments for sports betting violations, with former Boston Red Sox top pitching prospect Jay Groome receiving a one-year suspension for placing bets on MLB games while with the organization's affiliate team. Despite not playing in those games, Groome's actions violated MLB's policy. The 25-year-old, who was traded to the San Diego Padres, had a promising start in the Red Sox organization but dealt with injuries, including Tommy John surgery, and has yet to make his MLB debut.
