Jacques Freitag, a former world champion in high jump and Africa's record holder in the event, was found dead at the age of 42 with multiple gunshot wounds two weeks after disappearing in mid-June. He was last seen being taken away by a mysterious man to help with a job near a cemetery where he was later discovered. Freitag had a successful athletic career but battled drug addiction after retiring from sports in 2013, eventually facing difficulties finding employment and reportedly living on the streets. The South African police are treating his death as a homicide.
