Roman Sterlingov, the creator of the cryptocurrency mixing service Bitcoin Fog, has been sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for laundering over $400 million from illegal activities on darknet markets. Convicted of running one of the largest money laundering operations, he was also ordered to forfeit $395 million and more than $103 million in Bitcoin. Although the government sought a lengthy sentence, the judge noted that the 12.5 years reflect the need for punishment while taking into account the level of culpability.
