Four states to begin voluntary testing for bird flu in dairy farm milk tanks

Reported about 1 year ago

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Texas will initiate voluntary pilot programs to test bulk milk tanks on dairy farms for bird flu. This move aims to facilitate interstate herd shipping for farmers and enhance public health monitoring of the virus's spread. The program allows farmers to move herds across state lines without additional testing if bulk milk samples test negative for H5N1 for three consecutive weeks, with ongoing regular monitoring required. The initiative is part of efforts to curb bird flu dissemination and improve virus understanding among cattle herds while addressing safety concerns in dairy products.
