France is planning to reduce the benefits for unemployed individuals as the pressure from increasing debt becomes more significant.

Reported 5 months ago

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has announced a plan to reduce jobless benefits in France as part of President Emmanuel Macron's economic reforms to encourage more people to enter the workforce. The proposed changes include shortening the maximum duration of welfare to 15 months from 18 months and increasing the required work period to qualify for benefits. These modifications aim to boost employment and gradually reduce annual spending by €3.6 billion ($3.9 billion) while adding 90,000 more individuals to the workforce, without focusing on cost savings. The adjustments come in response to pressure on France to address its high debt levels, with the goal of bringing the budget deficit within the European Union's limit of 3% of GDP by 2027.
