FTC Refers TikTok Child Privacy Case to Justice Department

Reported 8 months ago

The US Federal Trade Commission has referred a complaint against ByteDance Inc.’s TikTok to the Justice Department, potentially leading to a government probe into the social media company’s handling of user data. The FTC found reason to believe that TikTok may be violating federal laws protecting children online and may be using unfair business practices. TikTok responded, stating they have been cooperating with the FTC for over a year and are committed to protecting children's privacy, while also facing scrutiny over its ties to the Chinese government and a past settlement with FTC over children's privacy violations.
