The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has referred a complaint against TikTok and ByteDance to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for potential violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and the FTC Act. The FTC began investigating TikTok and ByteDance over concerns about collecting personal information from children under 13 without parental consent. TikTok disputed the allegations, stating it has been cooperating with the FTC for over a year. The investigation stems from a 2019 settlement involving ByteDance's acquisition of Musical.ly. Lawmakers passed a law requiring TikTok's sale due to national security concerns.
