On June 18, 2024, at 8:30 am JST, some power equipment at Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant Unit 6 stopped, causing the pump that transports cooling water to used nuclear fuel to halt. Smoke was briefly seen in the turbine building basement of Unit 6 with a fire alarm activation, but no fire was confirmed after the fire department responded. Despite the smoke, there were no signs of a fire and visibility improved. Tokyo Electric plans to restart the pump once ready. The pool reportedly contains around 1,400 used nuclear fuel rods, which are expected to remain adequately cooled despite the pump stoppage.
