Gas Leak at Kuala Lumpur Airport Causes 39 Illnesses, Passengers Unaffected

Reported about 1 year ago

A chemical gas leak of methyl mercaptan at an aircraft engineering facility in Kuala Lumpur International Airport led to around 39 people feeling unwell, but no passengers were affected and there were no flight disruptions. The leak was contained to the facility separate from the passenger terminal, with the affected individuals being employees of three operating companies. The fire department responded promptly, treating 14 individuals on-site and hospitalizing 1, confirming the leaked gas was methyl mercaptan used as an odorant in liquefied petroleum gas storage tanks. The leak site is being repaired, with the tank set for decommissioning.
