Genetic Counselors in Short Supply Urge National Certification

Reported 11 months ago

In recent years, genetic testing has become popular with many biotech companies promoting its benefits at medical technology expos, and even shopping platforms openly selling test kits. However, the lack of genetic counselors for professional guidance often leads to unnecessary fear and wasted money among the public. Currently, only 64 genetic counselors in Taiwan are certified by the Human Genetics Society and the Taiwan Genetic Counseling Association, with no national professional certification system established by the Ministry of Health, resulting in chaos. With an increasing number of hospitals and biotech companies offering genetic testing services, the quality of counseling is being called into question, urging for a more stringent regulation to control the genetic testing market.
