During the Euro 2024 round of 16 match between Turkey and Austria, Turkish defender Demiral celebrated scoring by making a 'wolf' hand gesture, which is associated with the Grey Wolves, a far-right Turkish nationalist group. This gesture led to the German ambassador to Turkey being summoned by Germany as it was perceived as carrying hateful connotations. The Grey Wolves organization has a history of extremism and anti-semitism. Despite Demiral explaining that the gesture was only meant to show pride in his Turkish identity, the action caused concern in Germany and highlighted tensions regarding nationalism and extremism.
