German Finance Minister remains resolute on 2025 budget austerity

Reported 4 months ago

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner is standing firm on enforcing strict borrowing rules and resisting requests from some cabinet colleagues, including Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, and Labor Minister Hubertus Heil, for more funds in the 2025 budget. Lindner's stance is influenced by weaker tax revenue projections and his commitment to upholding Germany's debt brake law. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck have supported Lindner, with the budget expected to be approved in July and then sent to parliament for backing by the end of the year.
