German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy, Haebek, visited China as the first European official since the EU announced high tariffs on Chinese electric cars, clarifying that the EU tariffs are not meant as punishment but to ensure fair competition. Discussions are ongoing regarding the tariffs, with the EU planning temporary tariffs effective July 4, while investigations on anti-subsidy measures will continue until November 2. Haebek also warned China of economic consequences if they support Russia in the Ukraine conflict during a meeting focusing on climate change and green transformation cooperation. The dialogue aims to deepen cooperation between Germany and China in green initiatives, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding on climate change and green transformation last year.
