According to data released by the German Ministry of Economy, Germany's arms exports have increased by 30% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, with approved export totals reaching at least 7.48 billion euros. The majority of the exports in the first half of this year went to Ukraine, amounting to a historic high of 4.88 billion euros, making Germany Ukraine's second-largest arms supplier after the US. Despite previous promises to limit arms deliveries, especially to non-EU and non-NATO countries, Germany's arms exports have surged. The coalition government in power includes the Social Democratic Party, the eco-friendly Green Party, and the business-friendly Free Democrats. The government had plans to legislate to help control arms exports, but these plans were shelved with the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier in the year.
