Global Increase in Penile Cancer Incidence, with 1.8 Penile Amputations per Day in Brazil

Reported 11 months ago

A rare disease, penile cancer's global incidence and mortality rates are on the rise, particularly in Brazil where over 4,000 deaths in the past decade and 6,500 penile amputations occurred, equivalent to 1.78 amputations per day. HPV infection is a major risk factor, with vaccination offering prevention. Symptoms include non-healing ulcers, strong odorous discharge, bleeding, and discoloration. Studies show rising incidence rates worldwide, attributing the increase mainly to aging populations, with men over 60 being most affected. Preventative measures such as HPV vaccination, condom use, and circumcision are emphasized for reducing the likelihood of contracting this highly preventable disease.
