An report released by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) on June 17, 2024, revealed that global nuclear weapons spending by the 9 nuclear-armed countries increased by 13.4% in 2023 compared to 2022, indicating a new phase of nuclear arms race. The U.S. led the spending with $51.5 billion, followed by China with $11.9 billion and Russia with $8.3 billion. The report also noted reductions in total global nuclear warheads, but highlighted the increased readiness and deployment of certain warheads, with SIPRI emphasizing the elevated role nuclear weapons play in international relations today.
