Global Sea Transport Surges Due to Red Sea Attacks

Reported 12 months ago

A gauge of global sea transport is on track for its largest annual increase since 2010 following attacks in the Red Sea, leading ships to take longer routes, resulting in a 5.1% rise in ton miles compared to 2023. This increase is attributed to geopolitical disruptions, with vessels having to sail thousands of miles around Africa to avoid the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden where attacks have intensified. The longer journeys may negatively impact global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, but an uptick in trade volumes at the start of the year is also a contributing factor.
