General Motors and its subsidiary OnStar have agreed to a five-year ban on disclosing sensitive vehicle geolocation and driver behavior data to consumer reporting agencies, as mandated by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. The FTC had alleged that GM collected and sold precise driving data, including hard braking and speeding, without driver consent, often resulting in higher insurance rates. As part of the settlement, GM will now need to obtain driver consent before collecting data and will allow drivers to delete or limit their data.
