General Motors is laying off thousands of employees across various electric vehicle and battery plants in the United States, including around 1,200 workers at its Detroit EV factory. Additional cuts and temporary layoffs are happening at the Ultium Cells battery facilities in Ohio and Tennessee, which will also be idled starting January 5, 2026. These layoffs follow a recent announcement of job cuts in its white-collar workforce and a significant financial setback as GM adjusts its electric vehicle strategy, partly due to changes in federal tax credits and regulatory policies.
