On June 25, 2024, the Kaohsiung City Government held the 79th Environmental Impact Assessment Review Committee, where TSMC's plan for a new semiconductor plant on the former CPC Corporation's Kaohsiung Refinery site was approved, with an assurance of sustainable electricity and water supply. The development will cover 17.22 hectares and is expected to consume a substantial amount of electricity, but TSMC has committed to reaching 60% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% by 2040. Environmental groups have raised concerns about meeting the city's carbon reduction goals and transitioning to more sustainable practices in the semiconductor industry.
