South Africa's Competition Commission has found Google guilty of anti-competitive practices that favor global news over local media, potentially leading to a compensation payment of up to 500 million rand ($27.29 million) annually. The commission also recommended that Meta and other platforms stop deprioritizing local news, improve monetization for news outlets, and warned of potential fines if compliance is not achieved within six months. The final report is expected later this year.
