On June 29, 2024, the citizen group 'Unroofing Action' initiated a recall of Keelung Mayor Xie Guoliang, breaking through the second stage threshold, leading to criticism from KMT Chairman Eric Chu, who urged the DPP not to create hatred in this despicable manner. The vice-executive of a think tank, Ling Tao, even threatened that if the recall of Xie Guoliang is successful, the KMT may in turn recall Keelung City Council Speaker Tong Ziwei. In response, Tong Ziwei retaliated on Facebook, escalating the recall case into a political struggle and exacerbating Xie Guoliang's dilemma. The spokesperson for 'Unroofing Action,' Li Yanrong, stated that many of the signatures for the recall came from self-proclaimed Blue Camp supporters. Despite public expressions, the KMT still plans to counteract. If the recall of Xie Guoliang is successfully completed, they do not rule out launching recalls against DPP local representatives and Keelung City Council Speaker Tong Ziwei. The DPP Secretary-General Lin Youchang emphasized that 'Unroofing Action' is a spontaneous citizen movement, and the DPP does not have the ability to initiate such recalls at the local level, deeming the countermeasures taken by the KMT unwise and potentially detrimental to Xie Guoliang.
