Guangdong Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding, 5 Dead with Reservoirs Discharging Floodwaters and Residents Trapped

Reported 8 months ago

On June 17, 2024, in Meizhou, Guangdong, China, severe flooding occurred due to heavy rainfall, resulting in 5 deaths. The downpour, described by residents as 'rain pouring directly from the sky,' caused 5 deaths, 15 missing persons, and 13 trapped individuals in Meizhou. Additionally, 130,000 households were left without electricity due to the rain and floods. As upstream reservoirs released floodwaters to relieve pressure from the heavy rain, many residents downstream were not notified in time, leading to their entrapment. The provincial government of Guangdong has initiated a level 4 emergency response, with over 200 teams and 9,000 individuals engaged in rescue operations. The rainfall, particularly in the Sishui Town of Pingyuan County in Meizhou, reached 363.1 millimeters in 24 hours, causing landslides, flooding, and communication disruptions. Moreover, the excessive rainfall raised concerns about water levels in dams and reservoirs surpassing safety thresholds, leading to multiple flood discharge operations. In Longyan, Fujian, similar flooding and landslides forced over 60,000 residents to evacuate, with ongoing rainfall predicted by the local meteorological unit for the next two days.
