Severe rainfall in southern China has led to over 1.5 million people affected, with Guilin City in Guangxi Province facing its worst flooding since 1998. Starting on June 19th, the city has been submerged in water with levels reaching chest high, affecting important transportation hubs such as train and subway stations. The flooding has resulted in the closure of multiple tourist spots, suspension of public transportation, and emergency school closures. Tragically, a 20-year-old pharmacy assistant in Guilin lost her life while attempting to escape the rising floodwaters. The persistent heavy rainfall has broken records in the region, with the Li River in Guilin surpassing the flood levels seen in 1998, becoming the worst flooding event in 26 years.
