A hairstylist surnamed Li from Taipei attended a high school classmate's birthday party in 2020, where the birthday celebrant's friend surnamed Jian pulled out a pepper spray gun and shot Li in the face at close range twice, causing his right eyeball to shatter. Despite surgical reconstruction, Li's eye could not be saved, leading to his eventual depression and suicide. His family sued Jian, and the Taipei court ruled that Jian must pay over 1.72 million in compensation. The case can still be appealed. Jian, currently serving an 8-year sentence for severe battery, claimed mistaken identity and financial hardship as reasons for not being able to fully compensate Li, but the judge considered Li's young age, suffering, and significant life changes, thus ordering the compensation. Jian's appeal was rejected, leaving room for further appeals. Li's tragic story sheds light on the brutal consequences of violence.
