Hamas Accepts UN Ceasefire Agreement

Reported 7 months ago

On June 11, 2024, Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, publicly accepted the UN Security Council's ceasefire resolution proposed by the US, which includes permanent ceasefire, full troop withdrawal, and prisoner exchange in Gaza. While Russia abstained, the other 14 members of the UN Security Council supported the US-led Gaza ceasefire plan, showcasing diplomatic progress by the Biden administration. However, the outcome still hinges on Israel's response, with Hamas preparing to negotiate details and urging the US to ensure Israel's compliance. The ceasefire prospects also contributed to a drop in international oil prices on June 11. Hamas and the Palestinian Authority welcomed the UN's support and expressed readiness to cooperate with mediators to implement the plan.
