Hamas Softens Stance, Turning Point in Ceasefire Agreement

Reported about 1 year ago

Negotiations for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian radical group Hamas are progressing, with Hamas representatives revealing on July 6 that the organization has abandoned a key demand and agreed in principle to the US-proposed 3-stage Gaza ceasefire plan. The stages involve a comprehensive ceasefire with Hamas releasing hostages, followed by further negotiations for the release of more hostages, and culminating in the comprehensive reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. Israel's longstanding refusal to guarantee a ceasefire before any agreement is reached has been a key factor in restarting negotiations. Though Hamas is concerned about a potential resumption of hostilities by Israel post-hostage release, and Israeli officials are wary of Hamas's potential for indefinite delays, this marks the closest moment of agreement since the outbreak of the Israeli-Hamas conflict last year, attracting strong international attention.
