The annual Han Guang Exercise 40, a live-fire exercise by the Taiwanese military, scheduled for July 22-26, will no longer involve units like the Army Special Operations Command and Navy Marine Corps acting as the attacking force, citing reasons to avoid escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Defense Minister Gu Li-hsiung emphasized the need for verification through realistic simulated scenarios rather than adversarial techniques. The cancellation raises concerns about the impact on amphibious and airborne combat capabilities if training exercises like 'Lianyun' and 'Lianxing' are indeed scrapped.
