A weeklong heat wave hitting the Mid-Atlantic region, from Washington to New York City, will be followed by severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes. Tornado watches have been issued with a high risk of tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail. The heat, caused by high pressure, has led to near-record temperatures and an air quality advisory. Although the storms will provide temporary relief, more hot weather is expected, with the potential for flash flooding.
