The U.S. is facing an unacceptably high maternal mortality rate, especially among Black women due to medical racism. A report revealed that 22 maternal deaths occurred per 100,000 live births in 2022, with 80% deemed preventable. The U.S. lags in maternal healthcare compared to other wealthy nations, with statistics significantly higher. Improving midwife accessibility is crucial, as midwives can play a significant role in reducing maternal and neonatal deaths. The U.S. shortage of midwives and healthcare barriers must be addressed to enhance care and lower mortality rates during pregnancy and postpartum.
