According to a report from Yomiuri Shimbun on June 17, 2024, the mayor of Himeji City, Hidetai Kiyomoto, revealed plans to quadruple ticket prices for foreign tourists visiting Himeji Castle, potentially raising the price from $7 to $30 per person. The increased revenue from the ticket price hike is intended to address issues caused by excessive tourism and fund the upcoming 10th-anniversary renovations of the castle in 2025. With a record 1.48 million visitors in 2023, including 450,000 foreign tourists, Himeji Castle is experiencing a surge in popularity. This move aligns with various regions in Japan implementing measures to manage overtourism, such as Tokyo's dual pricing in restaurants and considerations of accommodation taxes in Hokkaido, Miyagi Prefecture, and Chiba Prefecture.
