Historic Defeat in French Elections as Far-Right Leads in First Round Vote, President Macron Suffers

Reported 12 months ago

Following the first round of voting in the French parliamentary elections on June 30, the far-right party 'National Rally' (RN) led with 33%, positioning close to taking over the government. President Macron's centrist ruling coalition only received 20%, falling to third place in a historic defeat. This outcome may potentially lead to a 'co-governance' situation with the far-right in the upcoming second round on July 7. The far-right never won in the first round before, and this time saw a significant increase in voter turnout to nearly 60%. Macron called for unity to block the National Rally, amidst protests in Paris against the rise of the far-right.
