Honduran Former President Sentenced to 45 Years for Drug Trafficking by US Court

Reported about 1 year ago

On June 26, 2024, ex-Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández was sentenced to 45 years in prison and an $8 million fine by a US federal court in Manhattan for drug trafficking charges. Many protesters outside the court held signs, some believing the sentence was too lenient while others argued there was insufficient evidence. The judge specified that Hernández had accepted millions in bribes from drug traffickers starting in 2004, helping smuggle over 400 tons of cocaine from Colombia and Venezuela through Honduras to the US, with an estimated value of $10 billion. Despite the possibility of appealing the ruling, given his age of 55, Hernández might spend the rest of his life in prison.
