Hong Kong Protesters Mobilize Against Controversial Extradition Law with Police Firing 240 Tear Gas Rounds on 5th Anniversary of Occupy Movement

Reported about 1 year ago

On June 12, 2019, Hong Kong protesters surrounded the Legislative Council in protest of the government's attempt to pass the controversial Extradition Law amendment, resulting in police firing tear gas to suppress them. This marked a significant turning point in the opposition to the law, leading to an escalation of the anti-extradition movement. Police fired 240 tear gas rounds, along with other projectiles, injuring over 80 people and arresting at least 11. The incident prompted the delay of the law's review, with many protesters facing charges, including rioting. Subsequently, Hong Kong's pro-democracy group 'Civil Human Rights Front' presented five demands, pushing for the withdrawal of the extradition bill, release of detainees, an independent inquiry into police conduct, and the resignation of Chief Executive Carrie Lam, among other calls.
