The Hong Kong regulator has directed Worldcoin to cease all operations in the country due to privacy concerns. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data stated that Worldcoin should stop scanning and collecting iris and face images of the public using its devices, describing the data collection as unnecessary and excessive. Worldcoin, which offers free cryptocurrency in exchange for iris scans, has faced criticism over its handling of personal data, with over 5 million people in 160 countries having signed up for the service. Despite the regulator's actions, Worldcoin maintains that it operates lawfully and is compliant with data protection laws.
