Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal Witnessing More Foreign Judges Resign, Describing the Rule of Law in Hong Kong as 'in grave danger'

Reported 10 months ago

Recently, three foreign judges of Hong Kong's Court of Final Appeal have announced their resignations, with one British judge, Lord Sumption, pointing out in a published article that the oppressive political atmosphere in Hong Kong is preventing judges from making independent judgments, leading to a crisis in the rule of law. The judges' resignations reflect concerns over the influence of China on Hong Kong's judicial system, as well as issues with the National Security Law, limitations on judicial independence, and the closing of democratic media outlets and arrests of dissenting voices in Hong Kong, creating a stifling atmosphere reducing the judiciary's ability to protect freedoms and potentially turning Hong Kong into an authoritarian state.
