The Houston Astros have released first baseman José Abreu, who was owed over $30 million from his $58.5 million contract signed in 2022. Abreu had been sent to the minors in April after a poor start to the season, with the Astros deciding to eat the cost of letting him go. Despite his previous achievements with the Chicago White Sox, Abreu struggled with a .124 batting average, a .361 OPS, and only two home runs this season with the Astros. The team is currently 31-38 and sits third in the AL West division.
