The Houston Astros have released José Abreu, the former AL MVP, with $30.8 million remaining on his contract. Abreu, who was batting .124 this season, spent time in the minors to improve his performance. The Astros owe him $30.8 million from the $58.5 million contract signed last year. Any team can now sign the three-time All-Star and former MVP for a prorated share of the major league minimum salary.
