Michael James Scott, a Black gay actor, reflects on his journey from being inspired by a dancing spoon in Beauty and the Beast on Broadway to becoming the longest-running Genie in Aladdin. Growing up in Orlando near Disney World, Scott's family supported him when he came out as gay, and he ultimately found success in the musical theater world, starring in various productions before landing the role of Genie in Aladdin. During the Broadway shutdown in 2020 amidst the George Floyd protests, Scott embraced his role as a prominent voice for the Black community and LGBTQ+ individuals, using his platform to spread joy and inspire others. Looking ahead, Scott envisions creating a romantic comedy musical where he can lead and represent individuals who look like him.
