To select a ripe watermelon, check for a creamy yellow spot on the underside where the melon sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. A heavy weight relative to its size is also a good sign of ripeness. Thumping the melon for a dull hollow sound can help indicate ripeness, as well as looking for webbing, scratching the surface lightly to reveal a white-green area, and avoiding visible cuts or bruises. Buying watermelons in season from April to September increases the likelihood of getting a juicy, flavorful melon.
